Editor's preface and contents to "The Education of Henry Adams," ca. 1916.

Manuscript, in Henry Adams's hand, of the "Editor's Preface" and "Contents" to his "Education of Henry Adams." The "Education" was first circulated by Adams in 1907 as a limited number of privately printed editions and was published for the Mass. Historical Society after Adams's death in 1918. Adams signed the manuscript "H.C.L." in pencil for Henry Cabot Lodge, the supposed author of the preface. Also includes a typescript copy of the preface, contents, and a list of errata in the private edition, presumably typed by Mass. Historical Society editor Worthington C. Ford. The typescript includes Lodge's pencilled annotations and signature. (A letter from Adams to Lodge of 1 Mar. 1916 in the Henry Adams papers enclosing the manuscript makes it likely that Adams wrote the manuscripts in 1916.) Also included is a letter from W.C. Ford to William R. Thayer regarding the exchange with the Historical Society of one of the privately printed editions in 1918.

1 case and 1 folder of photocopies.
